Antonia Steyn
Antonia Steyn is an award-winning South African photographer with a portfolio that incorporates portraiture and personal projects, as well as advertising and editorial work. Her background is Afrikaans - she was raised in the rural environs of the Orange Free State - but her foreground has been the slopes of Table Mountain since moving to Cape Town in 1996.
In 2000 Antonia graduated from UCT on the Dean's merit list and began working to establish herself in photography. In 2005 she became a full time professional and in 2007 was awarded Media 24 Photographer of the Year for her work with Pieter Dirk Uys. In 2008 her shoot with Eugene Terre Blanche won her an ABSA L'Atelier Merit Award. Her triptych "Steyn & De Villiers" won the Vuleka Art Award 2011 and she was selected as one of the Mail & Guardian Young South Africans 2011.
Antonia's personal work touches on incumbent African themes: reconciliation of the past with the present and repurposing traditional values for a new social landscape. Her lens is drawn to the stories, people and places that embody these questions. They imbue her work with a sense of drama that offers up an exposé of the South African identity in flux.
This site encompasses a broad spectrum of work. There are South African icons such as Uys and Terre Blanche, well known Cape Town personalities like Zolani of Freshlyground and fashion shoots at locations that span the map of Africa, but there is one constant at work here: strength of character both in front of and behind the camera.
